by Kelvin Teo | Last Updated: March 9, 2022

Wine is a wonderful drink, but it’s also a thrilling hobby and part of an exciting lifestyle. The wine world, though, is more than fermented grape juice; the proper glassware, tools and gadgets make wine much more enjoyable!

That’s the case with aerators, clever tools that make wine more expressive and attractive on the nose and palate. There’s no doubt most wine bottles benefit from a bit of oxygen — they just show their best after aeration. The question here is, which are the best wine aerators? How to choose? Well, here are the six best wine aerators of 2022. Choose your favorite!

Buying Guide: How To Pick a Good Wine Aerator

Picking a good wine aerator depends on your vinous habits. Of course, if you drink wine often, you might want to get your hands on sturdy, professional equipment. If you don’t drink wine all that often, a simpler model might be better for you.

Red wine drinkers will benefit the most from owning a good aerator, but you’ll be surprised what these smart gadgets can do for white, rosé and even sparkling wine! The correct aerator depends entirely on you. Still, you might want to check our wine aerator buying guide below to compare different aeration systems and models.

Types of Wine Aerators

Wine aerators vary widely, but we can group them according to their capabilities and design. These are the most common types of wine decanters.

Aerating pourers and decanter spouts: Some of the most common aerator models have the shape of a pourer or a spout, and they’re designed to allow the wine to oxygenate while you pour.

Shower funnels: One of the most classic aerators, the shower funnels are self-explanatory — a funnel redistributes the wine running through it through small holes that increase the wine’s contact with air.

Multipurpose wine aerators: Some aerators do more than just oxygenating your wine; they might serve as a bottle stopper, filter or decanter. These aerators are often clever and might help you achieve more with less equipment.

Smart wine aerators: Smart aerators vary widely; they might incorporate an electric spout, come with an app for your phone, or include gas capsules. These appliances are often the most sophisticated, but they come with higher price tags.

You might also want to assess the different wine aerators according to the following properties.

Ease of Use

Some wine aerators are effortless to use, just place them in the bottle’s mouth and pour. Others can be quite complicated, some including apps for your phone or rather expensive argon cartridges. For wine aerators, we prefer ease of use unless the extra work that comes with more sophisticated models is justified.

Material

You’ll find plenty of plastic aerators in the market, but others might be made from crystal or high-quality, durable materials like stainless steel.

When choosing a wine aerator, determining its durability and material matters; aerators made with inexpensive materials might not be up to the task, although that might not be the case every time.

Size

Depending on your wine drinking habits, the size and portability of an aerator might be more or less important to you. Aerators that are resistant and easy to carry are better for traveling wine enthusiasts, and sturdier gadgets are best suited for home enjoyment. It comes without saying, aerators are often small and should never be too bulky.

Design and Function

This is the most important thing to consider when choosing a wine aerator. How does it work? What’s the science behind it? Is it a high-tech aerator or a good-old wine pourer?

Some aerators in our buying guide are incredibly sophisticated, but we also included straightforward models that do the job just right.

Maintenance

Finally, aerators are supposed to make your wine tasting sessions more enjoyable, not the other way around. If an aerator is high maintenance or is hard to clean, you won’t want to use it all that often.

If an aerator is hard to clean or keep in good shape, you’re probably better off with a simpler model.

This year, the title for the best wine aerator goes to Vintorio. We love this aerator because it’s based on the Bernoulli Effect, in which flow speed and pressure in a fluid system ensure the wine is optimally oxygenated while you pour.

Not overly complicated, the Vintorio Wine Aerator is made with durable acrylic; it’s light and easy to carry around. Just place it into the bottle’s neck and pour. You can actually see the air bubbles going upstream to oxygenate the wine in a small, translucent compartment.

Aerating the wine with the Vintorio Wine Aerator Pourer is instant; it’s easy to clean and efficient as well. You can’t ask for more. Sure, some aerators on our list are more sophisticated, but this one does the job alright. This one’s also a great gift for wine lovers; it’s as pretty as it’s reliable.

Talking about uncomplicated and reliable wine aerators. This beautifully shiny shower funnel channels your wine into a decanter, allowing it to oxygenate as it passes through a filter and into a shower-like spout.

What’s unique about this piece of equipment is that the Rabbit can also remove sediments in well-aged red wine, acting as an aerator and a filter. You’ll love this aerator’s construct. It’s made with 100% 18/8 stainless steel, and it’s easy to clean, store and carry around.

The only thing we don’t love about this affordable aerator is the fact that it fits on a standard crystal decanter. You can’t just aerate any bottle of wine in more casual environments where a decanter is not needed.

Not the prettiest aerator on the list. We love Haley’s cork stopper for its versatility and multi-functionality. This is a bottle stopper, but it also filters and aerates the wine. At the same time, this handy stopper will help you re-cork a bottle as well. Rest assured your wine will be protected from the air until you’re ready to pour yourself another glass.

This 5-in-one aerator is made with BPA-free plastic in the United States, and although it doesn’t look like much, trust us, it’s the bottle stopper you always wanted. As for its ability to aerate wine, this one’s a bit limited, but it’s still a tremendous leak-proof stopper, so we love it anyway.

This high-tech aerator is something else. The Aveine Smart Wine Aerator uses a phone app, allowing you to control how much aeration the wine receives as you pour.

Open the bottle, attach the aerator and use the aerator’s app to scan the wine’s label. The app will suggest the right amount of aeration for the wine style. Just like that, the aerator oxygenates the wine as you pour it.

If the app doesn’t recognize your wine label, you can still adjust the level of aeration manually, which is tons of fun! The aerator only oxygenates the wine passing through as you pour, so you can adjust the amount of air while you taste.

Now, for a genuine game-changer, let us introduce you to the Coravin Pivot system. Coravin made the headlines a few years ago with a wine preservation system that allows you to extract wine from a bottle without removing the cork with a surgical needle.

Well, the innovative company has done it again, this time with a way to preserve wine after you have already opened the bottle. The Coravin system injects a neutral gas into the bottle, protecting the wine from oxygen. An opened bottle is still perfect after two weeks of opening.

The best part? Once the unique bottle stoppers are set up, you can pour the wine through the Coravin system, aerating it in the process. Is the Coravin Pivot System an aerator? Well, that’s not its primary use, but that’s why we’ve named the fantastic system the best multifunction gadget this year.
